Subject description
The post-doctoral position is in the area of efficient reconfigurable/programmable computing hardware implementation and prototype system development for emerging applications, including massive MIMO and large intelligent surfaces, computer vision, machine learning, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The targeted hardware platforms include field programmable gate array (FPGA)/software-defined radio (SDR) based prototyping systems and low-power application-specific instruction set processors (ASIP). The methodology of system-algorithm-hardware co-design/optimization will be explored to enable very efficient hardware implementation. The developed hardware will be used in real-life system-level testing and measurement campaigns.

Work duties
The main duties in this post-doctoral position is to conduct research in the research subject described above. The post-doctoral fellow is participating in joint research projects on massive MIMO technology (Lund University and Ericsson), EU project 5G smart, and joint research project on energy efficient AI (EIT and Math Departments, Lund University).

Teaching is included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Good knowledge in wireless communication systems, especially MIMO and Massive MIMO.
  • Knowledge in processing algorithms and processing hardware architectures for machine learning, computer vision, and robotics (e.g., UAVs).
  • Extensive experience with hardware (FPGA, ASIC, ASIP) implementation of digital signal processing algorithms for massive MIMO systems.
  • Hands-on experience in development of prototype systems (and use of them for real-life measurements) for massive MIMO.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. For appointments to the post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • General ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Function well in a team.
  • Ability to conduct both theoretical and experimental research in the subject area described above.
  • Experience with development tools for digital circuits (especially FPGA and ASIP) design.
  • Experience with development tools for wireless communication systems implementation and prototyping.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. LTH uses a special qualifications portfolio to report and document qualifications. Draw up the application in accordance with the following outline and attach it as three PDF files (in the recruitment system). Read more here: To apply for academic positions at LTH
