One of the strong scientific areas at the Faculty of Medicine, is stem cell and blood research. The currently available position combines this with another stronghold, namely that of laboratory-based precision medicine. The successful applicant will be part of the fruitful environment at the Dept of Laboratory Medicine, and more specifically at the Division of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine. The applicant will become part of the world-renowned research environment led by Prof. Martin L Olsson, M.D., Ph.D. at the Biomedical Center (BMC) in Lund

Work duties and areas of responsibility
The topic for this Ph.D. project will be erythrocyte biology and transfusion medicine. More specifically, the

question is what regulates expression of our blood group molecules on the red cell surface and what functional importance this has. This will be achieved by bioinformatic and experimental research with the purpose to understand the detailed mechanisms underlying human blood group expression.

Animal research and teaching responsibilities are not included in the position.

Requirements
M.Sc. degree in a relevant subject (e.g. cell biology, immunology, molecular biology etc) is required.

Desirable
Knowledge about red blood cell biology and/or blood group genetics and biochemistry is highly desirable.

Documented experience from clinical or experimental work with red blood cells and/or blood groups is highly valued.

Documented ability to perform research or other projects is desirable.

Documented knowledge about and experience from the scientific process (i.e. from hypothesis to project planning to summarising data for a publication) is an additional bonus

Other information about the position
Academic teaching is currently not part of the job description, but supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. students may be included.

Travel may be part of the job during periods of collaboration with other groups etc.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
