Lund University, Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

We announce a Researcher position within astronomy and astrophysics in the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics.

The successful candidate will work in the theoretical astrophysics group with Dr Alexander Mustill, who has extensive expertise and experience within the research area. The group has achieved funding to employ a researcher on a one-year contract.

Work duties

The researcher will work on the effects of stellar flybys and stellar evolution on planetary systems. The project involves running N-body simulations of planetary systems experiencing perturbations from other stars or from changes to their own star, in order to quantify the effects these have on observable properties such as multiplicity, orbital parameters and stellar atmospheric abundances.

Qualifications

The applicant must hold a PhD in astrophysics and have a research profile within celestial mechanics, N-body dynamics, and the effects of stellar flybys on planetary systems. Experience with N-body simulations of the moon systems of ice giants is a merit. Experience with supervising Bachelor's students is a merit.

Application procedure

The application should consist of a CV and publiction list.
