Subject description

During the last 20 years IEA has developed and conducted research on a simulation platform for evaluation of control strategies for wastewater treatment plants and the integrated urban wastewater system (Benchmark Simulation Model (BSM)). This development will continue further over the next few years and forms the foundation for this researcher position. Based on the BSM, various relevant research projects and investigations will be generated together with wastewater organisations and other research group in Sweden and abroad (modelling, operational strategies, optimisation of energy production/consumption, performance evaluation, etc.). IEA is also a partner in several international research projects where the BSM is used as a strategic tool. The international collaboration is a fundamental part of our research strategy.

Work duties

The work tasks include:

  • High quality research within the specified area;
  • Supervising MSc thesis projects and PhD students;
  • Writing and publication of research reports, journal papers and conference papers for a national and an international audience, both highly scientific ones and for the more practical wastewater community;
  • Writing research propsals for external funding;
  • Collaborating with industry and society;
  • Teaching and course devlopment (master’s level and PhD student level);
  • Adminstration related to the tasks above.


Qualification requirements
The requirements for potential employment are:

  • PhD degree within an area immediately relevant for the specific description of the subject;
  • Excellent knowledge in English, speaking and writing;
  • Excellent knowledge using Matlab/Simulink;
  • Good knowledge related to automation, control and modelling in general;
  • Significant experience of the simulation platform Benchmark Simulation Model;
  • Excellent and documented experience of modelling, operational strategies and evaluations of the integrated urban wastewater system (catchment, sewers, wastewater treatment plant, recipient);
  • A large international network related to wastewater research.


Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Experience of work and collaboration with full-scale wastewater treatments plants


Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.


Terms of employment

Fixed term employment (LAS 5:1 §, ALVA). Extent: 100%
