Subject description
Postdoctoral position in Heat Transfer oriented towards boiling on micro-/nanostructured surfaces for solar power plants.

Job description
The postdoctoral candidate will carry out research in the area of flow boiling on micro-/nanostructured surfaces (tubes) of relevance for concentrated solar power plants (CSP). The postdoctoral candidate will mainly contribute to the development of knowledge, experiments, and analytic models to guide the design of cavity receivers in CSP units.
This is a research-oriented postdoctoral position. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to interact with master students, PhD students and visiting scholars in the research group and contribute to meetings and seminars. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The main work duties involve:

  • Design test facilities for boiling in tubes for enhanced performance in CSP applications.
  • Reveal two-phase flow regimes, heat and mass transfer phenomena.
  • Develop novel micro-/nanostructured surfaces to enhance flow boiling heat transfer.
  • Flow instability in surface-structured tubes and methods for flow instability mitigation.
  • Based on the postdoctoral fellow’s research from well-designed experiments and analyses, he or she is expected to publish results in well-established scientific journals within the subject area.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a postdoctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications.

Additional requirements:

  • The subject of the doctorate degree should be in disciplines of Mechanical Engineering (thermal-fluid science, boiling), Chemical Engineering (transport processes, phase change).
  • Good oral and excellent written proficiency in English

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. For appointment to a postdoctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experimental expertise in boiling and multiphase flow.
  • Experience with scanning electron microscopy.
  • Experience with high speed visualization.
  • Capacity to publish in highly ranked scientific journals.
  • We are looking for a person, who is passionate for research, aim-driven, and can work independently.

The research is interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experiences from relevant areas of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, phase change phenomena (boiling) are of special value. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the group, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of two years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. Applications should be uploaded in PDF in the Lund University recruitment system and should include the following documents:

  • a cover letter in which applicants describe themselves and their particular research interests, including how they match the described research work (max 2 pages).
  • résumé/CV including a list of publications.
  • copy of the doctoral degree certificate, and other certificates/grades that you wish to be considered.
  • contact information of at least two references.
