Beamline description
MAXPEEM is a soft x-ray beamline on the 1.5 GeV ring. It houses a state-of-the-art aberration corrected low energy electron microscope in normal incidence mode, capable of imaging with very high spatial resolution. We are now looking for a promising scientist who enjoys working in an international and creative environment, to join our team of four (2 scientists, 2 postdocs) currently working at this advanced instrument.

Tasks
The MAXPEEM beamline team is responsible for the daily operation including assisting external user experiments, in house research, commissioning and maintenance and receives further support from different groups at MAX IV (IT, engineering, etc.) as well as external experts. Together with them you will:

  • Take an active role in the further development of the spectromicroscopy beamline and the scope of SPELEEM techniques that can be offered to the user community. This can involve anything from control software development, mechanical design, to finding innovative solutions for novel experiments and sample environments.
  • Develop your own research program exploiting the unique possibilities of the microscope.
  • Take a share of the user support, which is an important part of the beamline’s activity, which also provides opportunities for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field.
  • Be proactive in expanding the present and future user community of the MAXPEEM beamline.
  • Contribute to the commissioning, maintenance and operation tasks of the beamline and its infrastructure.

Qualifications
The candidate must hold a PhD - or equivalent degree - in physics or another field relevant to the beamline. The candidate should demonstrate experience in several of following areas:

  • Defining and exploring new research directions, especially within low energy photoelectron microscopy or related techniques
  • Computer control: automation of experiments, programming and/or advanced data analysis
  • Writing and publishing articles in peer reviewed journals adhering to the highest standards of academic publication
  • Demonstrable experience in user support, preferably at a synchrotron facility
  • Managing instrumentation projects and reaching the highest possible level of performance, especially important is an understanding of ultra-high vacuum environments.
  • Experience in development and operation of LEEM is a merit.

Other qualifications that are important are independence and an ability to take initiative. The work requires very good communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a solid command of English, both oral and written.

The first round of interviews will be conducted during week 39 (22-25 September).

Probation period may apply.
