Post-doctoral position in Transport and Roads, with focus on train delays and timetabling

Lund University, Department of Technology and Society, Division of Transport and Roads, conducts research and provides higher education within the field of transport planning and traffic engineering. The strong focus on sustainable and attractive urban regions contains aspects of safety for vulnerable road users, mobility for persons with special needs, and the design of sustainable transport solutions and infrastructure for collective and/or non-motorized modes. Increasingly, the division is also conducting research into railways. In order to strengthen our division with respect to railway planning and engineering, we offer a post-doctoral position in Transport and Roads, with particular focus on train delays and timetabling.

Subject

Transport and Roads, with focus on train delays and timetabling.

Work duties

This position will focus on how to understand and reduce train delays, how to plan better timetables, how to realistically simulate operations. This research addresses interlinkages between train delays, timetabling, and simulation (micro and macro) for both freight and passenger trains. The expected approach is quantitative, requiring knowledge in handling empirical delay data and distributions, timetabling, an understanding of railway simulation approaches, as well as experience of database management.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research within the subject area. Teaching and supervision is included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours, in the first, second and third cycles of studies. The position shall include the opportunity for three to six weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Description of further work duties:

  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society, e.g. within K2 – The Swedish Knowledge Centre for Public Transport.
  • Project management
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Good oral and written proficiency in Swedish.
  • Experience of collaborating with international researchers.
  • Experience of teaching and/or supervision of students.

Documented skills that respond to the topic description. Programming and database management skills.

  • Research stay(s) at international institutions are an advantage.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to seek and acquire external research funding.
  • A good ability to collaborate with industry and wider society.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
