Subject description
Post-doctoral position in electrical and information technology, with a focus on vehicular communication. Wireless connectivity in cars is no longer mainly about traditional infotainment. The use of wireless communication in vehicles is growing rapidly and is a key technology to increase road safety and efficiency. For accurate performance predictions, it is necessary to consider the whole system, including the influence of the surrounding environment, other vehicles, the networking stack and the application. V2X communication will rely on different underlying communication technologies. In order to make realistic assessment of the performance and study the complementary behavior of, e.g. 802.11p and LTE, and possibly C-V2X it is necessary to be able to make detailed and simultaneous simulation studies, including the whole network chain and proper temporal behavior.

In the project we will work with a simulation framework (based on NS/3, SUMO, Unity) for system and application level simulations where detailed models of the environment and antenna arrangements are used, parts of the communication system that are vital but also very specific in vehicular environments. We will develop cluster based channel models based on realistic environment descriptions achieved from detailed map data. To complement existing models in the literature, especially when it comes to directional properties in the considered scenarios, we will perform directional channel measurements in some selected scenarios.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area, as described above. The work includes development of suitable channel models for system level simulations, work with the complete system level simulator including realistic mobility patterns, environment description, channel models and communication protocols. Planning, participation and evaluation of measurement campaigns for channel characterization.
  • Collaboration with industry; the project is a part of a larger joint project with the Swedish automotive industry and hence includes project meetings and joint project work.
  • Teaching at a undergraduate and graduate level, and supervision of degree projects and doctoral students, might be included.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience from simulation of wireless communication systems.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience from radio channel characterization and modelling.
  • Experience from vehicular communication systems, such as 802.11p and C-V2X.
  • Knowledge in antenna design and wireless propagation.
  • Experience from Omnet, NS/3 or similar frameworks for network simulation.
  • Experience from SUMO and Unity or similar frameworks for mobility simulation.
  • Knowledge in C++, MATLAB and LabView.
  • Practical experience from RF measurements, especially RF channel measurements.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. Please draw up the application in accordance with LTH’s Academic qualifications portfolio – see link below. Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system. Read more:
