The Department of Educational Sciences is part of the Faculties of Humanities and Theology at Lund University. Researchers at the department conducts research in the field of educational sciences with a number of different specialisations, including subject didactics, higher education and school and educational history and sociology. The department cooperates with a number of schools and school authorities. It is also the central hub in the extensive network of the Teacher Education at Lund University. The department also includes the Division for Higher Education Development (AHU), which offers courses for teachers at Lund University and conducts higher education development work in areas such as e-learning.

Postdoc in educational sciences, specialising in research on education for professional expertise spanning higher education, secondary education and policy (two-year appointment).

Work duties

The appointment includes 20% of working hours dedicated to teaching in the core courses of the teacher programme and in the courses on teaching and learning in higher education offered at AHU.

The Department of Educational Sciences offers education that aims to develop professional teachers. The postdoc position is an initiative to further our knowledge of the complexity of teacher education as an simultaneously academic and vocational degree. Teacher education is situated in a complex field where different stakeholders – with different goals, values and rationales – pull in different directions.. In this field, both the individual and the programme are to navigate toward professional competence. The postdoc is expected to be able to work autonomously, but also to collaborate with other researchers within the subject. The successful candidate is to participate in and contribute to the research environment by actively participating in research seminars and other research-related activities. The postdoc is expected to conduct his or her research predominantly at the workplace in Lund.

The qualifications for employment are a PhD, or an international qualification deemed equivalent to a PhD, completed in the three years prior to the application deadline. If a PhD was awarded earlier than this, evidence of parental leave, illness or similar must be submitted with the application. Since the empirical material in this area predominantly is in Swedish, familiarity with the Swedish language is required.

The assessment criteria include a good ability to develop and conduct research of high quality as well as teaching expertise. For appointment as a postdoc, consideration is primarily given to research expertise. In order to enable assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, the applicant is to attach a research plan for the research they intend to carry out within the position. Only applicants with research plans and previous work that reinforces the research environment will be considered for the position of postdoc.

Additional qualifications:

  • Research on teacher education, or any other academic vocational education, or on teaching competence
  • Research on higher education relevant to the specialisation
  • Higher education teaching experience from teacher education or other vocational programmes
  • Experience of higher education development work

  • a list of publications (including DOI, ISBN or ISSN numbers)
  • a signed research plan with a maximum of 1 500 words (excluding references) on the project the applicant intends to carry out during the period of employment

The postdoc’s familiarity with academic vocational education and an ability to reflect at the meta level on the theory and methods of academic vocational education is desirable and should be reflected in the research plan.

The research plan is to include a description of:

  • aims and issues
  • theory and method
  • relation to the international research field including the most internationally significant works
  • a time plan and expected results
  • the applicant’s competence in relation to the project demands

Terms of employment
The position is a fixed-term appointment of a maximum of two years and entails full-time hours in accordance with the agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoc between the Swedish Agency for Government Employers and the employment organisations OFR/S, Saco-S and SEKO, 4 September 2008. The University applies individual salary setting.
