Manure management is a main source of methane emissions. Mitigation options such as biogas treatment exist, but effects cannot be verified and are not accounted for in inventories. Within the current joint research project among academic and industrial players, a new method to estimate methane emissions from manure will be used to investigate farm-level greenhouse gas mitigation, and for upscaling to national inventories. The project partners include universities and research institutes from Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden, as well as Sweden industrial project partner.

Work duties Division of Biotechnology, KILU at Lund University will team up with Bioprocess Control (Lund, Sweden) to develop a new in-vitro laboratory apparatus based on gas measuring technique and automated batch fermentation analysis platform from the company to quantify methane and carbon dioxide produced in bulk slurry and at the air-liquid interface. The technical approach will enable simulation of slurry storage close to real farm conditions and will allow for effects of oxidative processes at the slurry-air interface. Apart from the above mention research subject, the current research position will also be involved in new methods development and validation for both aerobic and anaerobic respiration analysis with wide application in biotechnology field.

Qualification requirements Applicants must have:

  • Ph.D degree and research experience in biotechnology or chemical engineering related fields (such as environment biotechnology, fermentation technology, animal and plant agriculture, food and feed science, applied microbiology or biochemistry and chemical engineering)
  • Extensive experience working in scientific laboratories, preferably biotechnology-, biochemistry-, agriculture- or chemical engineering laboratories
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Good academic record in scientific publications

Assessment criteria and other qualifications As a person you are independent, well organized, curious and have a strong analytical mind. You have the ability to demonstrate good attention to details and have a hands-on approach for solving technical challenges.
