Post-doctoral fellow in Economic Demography with a focus on the economics of ageing, caregiving and analysis of Swedish register data

Job assignments

The holder will mainly work in the externally funded research project Longer working lives and unpaid caregiving with research questions related to the economics of the family, ageing and unpaid caregiving exploiting large-scale data sources, such as Swedish register data and international surveys to observationally and causally establish how life course transitions, health shocks, and ageing affects men’s and women’s economic and physical well-being in Sweden. More specifically, the research will consider how unpaid caregiving and its impacts are related to (changing) family and gender relations among older working age adults. The postdoc will also be responsible for a research module estimating the macroeconomic value of unpaid caregiving in recent as well as coming decades in Sweden and a number of OECD countries. Work tasks involve data management and programming of individual-level data from surveys and administrative records, designing studies; some from which causal inferences can be drawn, undertaking empirical analyses, and writing academic papers for publication in international, well-renowned journals. The work should be done independently but also in collaboration with other members of the research team. The work also comes with the responsibility to administer data, stakeholder contacts, and public outreach on behalf of the research team, which involves communication with national agencies. Applicants should document their ability to perform various research tasks. The post-doctoral fellow should also be willing to interact with students and to participate actively in the common activities at the Centre for Economic Demography. The position involves a limited amount of teaching (maximum of 20%) and/or supervision of Bachelor and Master's Theses.

Basis of Assessment

Scholarly proficiency is the main requirement for employment.

The holder of the position should be competent and experienced enough to be able to carry out independent research in Economic Demography using state-of-the-art quantitative methods with an awareness of empirical design. Documented experience in working with such methods and design (micro- as well as macro-level, primarily proven through published work and a detailed self-assessment and research plan) is a requirement. Training and documented experience in working with Swedish register data and other relevant data sources is also a requirement. The post-doctoral fellow must hold a PhD in Economics or Economic History, awarded no more than three years ago (unless the applicant has been on parental or sick leave). Applicants with a documented interest in the areas economics of the family, health economics, or public economics, with a policy-oriented focus, are especially encouraged to apply.

For appointment, the candidate must have demonstrated a high degree of research expertise as manifested in the quality of the PhD dissertation and other publications, preferentially in well-renowned international journals. Documented skills in quantitative analysis and software such as SAS and Stata are required. In order to be considered, the applicant must document very good proficiency in Swedish in order to be able to fulfill the administrative responsibilities regarding data bases and public outreach described above. We also look for high-level communicative skills (for example through documented proficiency in English), good time management, and the ability to interact with the research community and building networks.

The application must include a research plan where the applicant presents her/his own ideas for research to be conducted.

In addition to the above, the following set of criteria will be applied in the assessment of candidates:

  • other results and distinctions which attest to the applicant's ability to do research
  • ability to engage and inform society at large about research

The evaluation will take personal qualities, such as academic independence, willingness to collaborate, and communication skills, into consideration.
