Job assignment

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated laboratory assistant who is interested in working on a project exploring the comparative genomics of cooperative breeding in birds. We require someone with excellent organizational skills and a strong background in laboratory-based Molecular Biology research. The project will involve DNA extraction from a variety of different types of avian samples, performing PCRs and the preparation of samples for both Sanger and Next-Generation Sequencing. The project aims to extract high-molecular weight DNA from samples. As this is an advanced procedure, the successful candidate should have substantial previous experience of DNA extraction as well as experience of a wide range of molecular techniques.

Qualifications

It is essential that the applicant has:

  • An MSc in Ecology, Evolution or Molecular Biology or a closely related field with a strong emphasis on Molecular Biology
  • Substantial experience of molecular genetics including DNA extraction, PCR and preparing samples for sequencing 
  • Fluent in English

Meriting

It is desirable that the applicant has:

  • Experience of performing DNA extractions on museum samples
  • Experience of a broad-range of molecular genetic techniques
  • Motivation to work in a team and desire to take responsibility 

Basis of Assessment

Applicants are evaluated based on how well they fulfill the requirements detailed above. Such evidence may include documentation of completed coursework, scientific publications, technical and analytical know-how, evidence of organizational skills and enthusiasm for molecular biology and evolution. Where possible, statements to these effects should be accompanied by objective or independent assessment of the candidate’s track record and potential. These may include links to access published or unpublished (e.g., thesis) research material or letters of support from supervisors or previous employers.

Salary will be set according to the general regulations for laboratory assistants at Lund University in relation to the number of years research experience and achievements.
