The research group

You will be working in a research group focused on the biology of the red blood cell, particularly blood group genetics and erythropoiesis. The group is physically located at the Biomedical center (BMC) in Lund at the Division of hematology and transfusion medicine, Dept. of Laboratory Medicine. The research group is led by Professor Martin L Olsson, an internationally renowned and awarded translational scientist in the blood group field. We are now seeking a postdoctoral fellow in blood group biology who will become part of an exciting field in rapid development and be a member of a growing  research group working to answer fundamental questions on our most common cell, the red blood cell. The team consists of approx. 15 members who will become your closest colleagues. The employment is full-time for two years according to a central agreement on a fixed-term employment as a postdoc. The desired date of admission is April 1:st or by agreement.

Work duties and area of responsibility

Your role will mainly be to initiate and drive your own research project in close contact with the principal investigator and other team members or collaboration partners. In addition, you are expected to help guide students and junior members of the group.

Your projects will be about blood group genetics, structure and function, i.e. red cell surface molecule biology. Since the malaria parasite utilizes blood group molecules to invade our red blood cells, infection models to decipher such mechanisms further may be used.

Qualifications

By postdoc is meant a worker who has completed a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to the doctorate degree, and who graduated a maximum of three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been passed earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trust assignments within trade unions or other similar circumstances.

When hiring as a postdoctoral fellow, the following assessment basis applies:

• Good ability to develop and carry out good quality research and educational ability.

When hiring as a postdoctoral fellow, scientific ability must be taken into account. Otherwise, the assessment is made on the basis of the following requirements for employment:

• Doctoral degree with dissertation focused on red blood cell biology, malaria or other subject against blood research. blood cells.
• Documented experience of work with blood group research, transfusion medicine or related fields.
• Documented experience of blood group biology and the formation of red blood cells.
• Experience and knowledge of working in a cell culture laboratory.
• Knowledge of handling a flow cytometer as well as other methods for evaluating cell growth and characterization.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal characteristics. The assignments require that you have the ability to work independently and to run projects as well as the ability to collaborate within the research group.

Meritable for the position:

• Documented knowledge and experience of working with malaria parasites.
• Documented experience of additional laboratory methods, in addition to the above mentioned requirements.
• Habit of digital processing of data in different analysis programs and experience in statistics programs, the Office package or the equivalent.
• Experience in supervising students in a laboratory environment.
