Lund University, LTH,

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Mathematics LTH and Numerical analysis is one of the divisions at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, with 60 employees and activities in a broad spectrum of applied and pure mathematics. The research within applied mathematics is foremost conducted in numerical analysis and mathematical modeling with focus on partial differential equations (PDEs). Current projects in numerical analysis include splitting schemes and domain decomposition methods for nonlinear parabolic equations, PDE-based methods for machine learning and integral methods for elliptic equations. The research in mathematical modeling includes simulation and parameter estimation of sedimentation processes, modeling of traffic flows, as well as population dynamics for resistant bacteria and malaria mosquitos. The division conducts teaching at most of LTH’s engineering programs. Research collaborations, exchange students and employees from a wide range of countries yield an international environment at the division.

Mathematics LTH and Numerical analysis now seeks a senior lecturer in applied mathematics with focus on PDEs. The purpose of the recruitment is to strengthen
and further develop the research and teaching within applied mathematics.

Subject

Applied mathematics with focus on partial differential equations.

Subject description

The applicant’s research focus shall be a specialisation in applied mathematics for PDEs that both strengthens the division’s current research and adds new aspects, especially for PDEs on evolving surfaces, stochastic PDEs or nonlinear PDEs related to industrial processes.

It should be clearly stated in the application how the applicant’s current research relates to the division’s research environment in applied mathematics, and how the applicant’s plan for future research will develop the existing environment.

Work duties

Work duties include:

• Research within the subject area.
• Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
• Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
• Actively seeking external research funding.
• Collaboration with industry and wider society.
• Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

• A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
• Demonstrated teaching expertise.
• Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Additional requirements:

• Experience of a relevant research environment outside the division, corresponding to, at least, a two-year postdoc position.
• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• Teaching experience of mathematics at the first cycle of studies conducted in Swedish, or teaching experience of numerical analysis at the second cycle of studies conducted in English.

Assessment criteria
When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, assessing research experties of greater importance than teaching expertise.

For appointments to senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

• A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject. Special consideration will be given to how the applicant’s expertise can strengthen and renew the division’s current research in applied mathematics.
• Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
• An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
• An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
• A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Other qualifications:
• Capability to acquire external research funding in competition.

Consideration will also be given to ability to cooperate, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
