Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Department of Clinical Sciences Lund is one of six departments at the Faculty of Medicine. Clinical Sciences Lund cooperates closely with Skåne University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine in order to optimize the conditions for preclinical and clinical translational research, research strategies and development, as well as education on both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Within the department we aim to maintain a good working environment based on mutual respect and consideration. We constantly strive to improve the conditions for work, development and participation for all employees.

Research group for breast-genetics - Cancer and non coding RNA
The aims of our research are to contribute to a better understanding of the role of non-coding RNAs in cancer development. The motivation behind our research can be divided in two fields. First, to learn how non-coding RNAs regulate and promote carcinogenesis and secondly, to identify non-coding transcripts that can be used as biomarkers or therapeutic targets. Our research combines experimental laboratory work with bioinformatics. To characterize the expression of non-coding RNAs in normal tissues and breast tumors we apply massive parallel sequencing techniques. This information is used to find non-coding genes associated with disease and to selected genes for in depth studies.

The research group is now looking for a PhD student for research education in the project ” Therapeutic targeting of small non-coding RNAs in cancer”. The position is full time for four years. Preliminary starting date is April 1st 2020 or upon agreement.

Work assignments
We are looking for an ambitious and well-organised PhD student for the project.

The general aim of our research is to characterize the basic mechanisms involving deregulation of microRNA function in cancer as a way to improve cancer treatment. Although the project is in general pre-clinical it also includes a heavy part of drug development.

The PhD student will not be involved in teaching activities during the first two years but is expected to be part of the activities organized by the CARES Research school as an assistant if required. The PhD student will actively participate in all seminars and journal club series organized by the department.

Experimentation with animal models will be part of the doctoral training.

Qualifications
Applicants should fulfil the basic eligibility requirements for the Faculty of Medicine (see https://www.medicine.lu.se/study/phd-programme/prospective-phd students/entry-requirements) with a degree in a relevant subject such as biology, biomedicine or similar education.

Applicants should also have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

Meriting
Studies or experience in bioinformatics and programming is meriting.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who: Have completed a second-cycle degree; have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statutes 1998:80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
