Post-doctoral position in Water Resources Engineering with focus on water and nutrient resources management 

The Division of Water Resources Engineering (TVRL) is the largest one in terms of the number of employees at the Department of Building and Environmental Technology at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH). Activities at TVRL include research, teaching and development of innovation focusing on water in both society and nature. TVRL has a strong track record of working with partners in the business and public sectors, and focusing on research including urban water, wetland systems, water planning and hydrology.

Subject description
This post-doctoral position has a specific focus on agricultural water management and nutrient recovery from waste streams. The specific subject areas of this position are:

  • Development of sustainable solutions for local management of water and nutrients in agricultural areas
  • Dewaterability of sludge

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. 

Work duties include:

  • Research within the EU-funded H2020 ‘WATER retention and nutrient recycling in soils and streams for improved AGRIcultural production’ (WATERAGRI) project
  • Laboratory work involving wetland systems with climate chambers
  • Fieldwork
  • Development work related to the dewaterability estimation test device
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and co-supervision of doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above 

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject area of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.  

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research
  • Teaching skills

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Knowledge about the effects of climate change and climate variability
  • Knowledge about surface-groundwater interactions
  • Experience on computational modelling and big data
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary and/or international groups
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to drive projects
  • Experience of seeking external research funding
  • Ability to participate in and expand a professional network 

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen on-going research within TVRL, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
