The research group

Research activities at the department of Rheumatology, IKVL, covers a wide range of rheumatic diseases including inflammatory joint disease as well as systemic rheumatic and connective tissue diseases.

The vasculitis clinical and epidemiology group within the Department of Rheumatology, IKVL, Lund university, has almost 20 years of research experience in epidemiology, outcome and register research in systemic vasculitides. The group consists of research group leaders and three doctoral students. The group has a closer collaboration with other researchers in renal medicine and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology as well as international research collaborators. We conduct clinical research on epidemiology and long-term follow-up of all the vasculitis diseases.

We have recently commenced a collaboration within the International European Consortium, FAIRVASC-project, which works with register research for the construction of a large database to conduct studies to predict outcomes such as organ damage, kidney failure and mortality in patients with systemic vasculitis.

The vasculitis clinical and epidemiology group, IKVL, Lund university, is now looking for a database manager or equivalent for this project for a fixed term employment of two years. Proposed start date 2020-06-01 or by agreement.

Work tasks

FAIRVASC project (about 50% of the time):

50% of the time you will be responsible for data management for the FAIRVASC-project in Lund. You will work within an international team located in Dublin-Ireland. The consortium includes research groups from more than 8 European countries. You will prepare data for statistical analysis such as. regression analysis, Machine Learning / Artificial intelligence etc.

The following are summary of your key duties with the FAIRVASC-project:

  • Liaise with IT staff on site to enable access to health data and identify risks.
  • Collaboration with all stakeholders in establishing, refining, and documenting health database schemas.
  • Configure R2RML mappings to support mapping of health data to agreed OWL vocabularies.
  • Execute uplift/ETL of health data into an RDF triplestore using in house technology pipeline.
  • Manage uplift procedure to ensure timeliness of data to triplestore.

The vasculitis epidemiology unit (about 50% of the time)

In the second 50% of the job you will be responsible for the database for the epidemiological unit / vasculitis group at the Department of Rheumatology, Lund University. The database includes the cohort for epidemiology studies, register database from various Swedish, regional, national and international registers.

The following are summary of your key duties with the vasculitis epidemiology unit in Lund:

  • Responsibility for data management, data coding and organization of data within the Department of Vasculitis Epidemiology, at the Department of Rheumatology, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund, Lund University
  • Active participation in all applications for data extracts from different regional and. national registers
  • Supervision of doctoral students and other researchers including term-5 and term-10 students who carry out their scientific work at the Department of Vasculitis Epidemiology, IKVL, Lund University
  • Participating in and performing statistical analyzes that fall under your area of expertise.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Experience in RDBMS and RDB data dumps and be comfortable with query languages such as SQL. The applicant should also have experience working with web servers, and understand issues related to configuring access to remote data sources.
  • Ideally, the candidate should be familiar with Web of Data and Semantic Web technologies, having worked with Linked Data and the SPARQL query language, the R2RML mapping language, and have experience using triplestores (Jena Fuseki, GraphDB, etc.).
  • Experience with RDBMS concepts and query languages, e.g. SQL.
  • Experience with python.
  • Excellent analytic, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid documentation skills.
  • A high level of self-motivation and capable of working on own initiative.

Highly desirable:

  • A background working with health service databases would be a bonus.
  • Experience with semantic web technologies, SPARQL, using triplestores
  • Experience working in the medical domain with data registries. 
  • Experience with AI and machine-learning
  • Experience with qualitative research methods and analyses including content analyses
  • Experience with RDB2RDF processes, e.g. R2RML
