Lund University, LTH, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

NanoLund, founded in 1988 is the center for Nanoscience at Lund University and a Strategic Research Area funded by the Swedish government. NanoLund is at the forefront of research on semiconductor nanowires, including both material growth and characterization, as well as their use in different devices and in, for example, fundamental quantum physics experiments. Theoretical research on nanowires and other nanostructures is conducted in close collaboration with the experimental activities.

Subject description
Theory for Quantum Technology in nanoscale semiconductor systems.

Work duties
In the second quantum revolution, now unfolding worldwide, quantum mechanical superposition and entanglement are being created, characterized and controlled with unprecedented precision in a wide variety of physical systems. This development has deepened our understanding of the physical laws governing the microscopic world and provided a broader framework for technology, with fundamentally new capabilities. The defining aim of quantum technology is to harness superposition and entanglement for radical improvements, in terms of capacity, sensitivity and speed, of applications in a broad range of areas such as information processing, material science and electronics.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The topic of the position is to theoretically explore novel ways to create quantum states with radically enhanced coherence times in nanoscale semiconductor electronic systems, as well as to propose schemes for initializing, manipulating and reading out such states. Key to the project is the close collaboration with NanoLund experimental teams, inspiring and guiding theoretical modelling and simulations. The goal is to propose and theoretically analyse proof-of-concept quantum information processing schemes and related quantum technologies which leverage core NanoLund competences on semiconductor device design, characterization and measurements.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to interact with the master students and the PhD students in the research groups and contribute to meetings and seminars. Collaboration with experimentalists is an imoprtant part of the position. The postdoctoral fellow will work together with associate profs. P. Samuelsson and M. Leijnse and members of their respective groups.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • The subject of the doctorate degree should be physics.
  • Experience with research in theoretical condensed matter physics.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience from theoretical research of relevance for the subject area of the position.
  • Experience with programming and numerical work.
    Very good communication skills.
Willingness to collaborate with experimentalists. Experience from such collaborations will be seen as meriting.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

We have full understanding for current restrictions regarding moving and travel and the starting date will be set according to agreement.
