Work duties

The successful candidate is to establish their activity at the Department of Translational Medicine, ITM, which conducts research in fields including cancer, haemostasis, infection medicine, virology, immunology (congenital and adaptive), reproductive medicine, urology, hand surgery, bioinformatics, radiation physics and imaging diagnostics. The department’s profile entails that most research teams are conducting translational research, often in close collaboration with public healthcare with the aim of transferring results from basic research to clinical settings. The holder of the research senior lecturership in medical inflammation research will be expected to establish and develop their own successful research activity within the subject area. The holder of the position will also be expected to take a leading role in generally reinforcing and deepening expertise in molecular processes involved in inflammation, at both the cellular and the molecular level. Several of the above-mentioned research teams’ projects involve studies of inflammatory mechanisms using advanced methodology of major significance, which is why the successful candidate will benefit from establishing collaborations with the various research teams at the department.

The work duties of the position mainly involve research, but teaching and management duties at the Faculty of Medicine are also included. The position includes research and teaching in the first, second and third cycles, which requires good knowledge in the subject area. The successful candidate will also be expected to carry out other work duties normally included in a position as senior lecturer, such as administrative tasks, internal and external elected office and representing the subject nationally and internationally. Additional work duties may also be included. 

Qualifications

Pursuant to Chapter 4 Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person is qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer if they have demonstrated teaching expertise and have been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties it will involve.

Appointment as a senior lecturer requires at least five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way, unless special circumstances apply (see Lund University’s Appointment Rules).

Assessment criteria

The applicant is to have demonstrated research expertise and teaching expertise of significance to the subject. The assessment will attach particular importance to research expertise and secondarily to teaching expertise.

The applicant is to have demonstrated research expertise through good results in research at a national and international level including documented experience of medical inflammation research. The applicant is to hold a PhD in a subject area of relevance to the position. The applicant should have publications of high quality published with the applicant in a senior position. The applicant should prove their ability to obtain external research funding in competition. Emphasis will be placed on development potential and research programme. Notwithstanding the applicant’s specific research specialisation, research of a translational nature with a long-term aim of defining and laying the basis for future diagnostic methods and treatment principles that can be implemented in public healthcare is considered an additional qualification. 

Teaching expertise is demonstrated through the ability to plan, develop and implement teaching and supervision in the first, second and third cycles of study.

Leadership is demonstrated through documented administrative expertise, including leadership, the ability to organise, develop and lead research environments.

External engagement is demonstrated through the ability to collaborate and a demonstrated ability to interact with wider society.

The general qualification requirements for teaching staff at Lund University are being suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.
