Specific subject description
Research and education in human geography deals with social, cultural, political and economic processes of change and their spatial expressions and consequences for people at different scales, whether local, regional or global. The key areas of research and teaching at the department are landscape, urban and social geography, economic geography, development geography, GIS and remote sensing and human ecology. The Department now seeks to broaden its expertise in the area of quantitative geography.

Job assignments
The post comprises teaching and research in Human Geography, with a focus on quantitative geography. The position contains 20 per cent of government-funded research time, with the possibility of expanding the share of research through external funding. The remainder of the position is devoted to teaching and administration.
The teaching duties will be divided between the Faculty’s interdisciplinary Master’s programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Human Geography. The teaching will primarily be focused on quantitative analysis in the second cycle, although teaching in the first and third cycles may also be included.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute actively to the development of the education and research environment at the faculty and the department.

Work duties
The work duties of the position cover both research and teaching, while some administrative duties may also be included.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To qualify for appointment as a senior lecturer, you must have been awarded a PhD in Human Geography with a specialization in quantitative geography, or have the corresponding research competence. Applicants must be able to demonstrate documented teaching competence in quantitative geography, including teaching related to common software used in the field. An additional requirement is the ability to teach in English.

Applicants are required to have completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. In special circumstances, some of the training in higher education teaching and learning may be conducted during the first year of employment.

Further qualifications are the ability to teach quantitative methods to students with international and interdisciplinary social sciences backgrounds, experience of developing and administering education, e.g. as program or course director, and the ability to compete for external research funding.

The criteria for assessment of applications are a good ability to develop and carry out research of high quality, and teaching competence.

Equal importance is attached to research expertise and teaching expertise.
In the assessment of research expertise, particular emphasis will be placed on research activity (scope/ research quality), the ability to initiate and independently conduct research and the documented ability to obtain research funding in competition. National or international research collaboration will be taken into account.

In the assessment of teaching expertise, educational quality and breadth of teaching experience will be the main criteria. Furthermore, a documented ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching, as well as the ability to link teaching to research will also be considered important. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to develop teaching based on advanced quantitative geography (for instance spatial analysis, multi-level modelling, econometrics and time series analysis).

Finally, the ability to interact with wider society and to communicate about research and development work will be taken into account.
