Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The SXL project
The SXL (Soft X-ray Laser) project is a project for a Free Electron Laser in the soft X-ray energy range at the MAX IV facility at Lund University. An initial design study is funded and will be completed in early 2021. The funding comes from the Knut & Alice Wallenberg foundation and several Swedish universities. The SXL will be based on the 3 GeV linac already in operation at the MAX IV.

The position is placed at the Science faculty at Lund University. The FEL modeling of the SXL is led by Ass. Prof. Francesca Curbis and the group’s work on Free Electron Laser studies is co-ordinated by Prof. Sverker Werin.

Tasks
The tasks are within the field of simulations of the accelerator and FEL systems for the SXL design study. The focus is on continuing the ongoing work with jitter studies of the system and options for two-colour two-pulse operation. A significant part of the duties is the writing of the final report on the FEL part of the design study.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a thorough knowledge of FEL simulations and modeling. Be able to, within a very limited start-up time, run simulations in the given frame work: ASTRA-elegant-Genesis 1.3 version 4 in a cluster environment.

The suitable candidate should be able to both work alone and to collaborate with the other persons in the team. Ability to discuss and share knowledge and results is crucial for building the overall competence in the project. Ability to write and speak English is also a key asset for the writing of the final report of the SXL CDR.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in FEL physics, Accelerator physics or equivalent subject.
  • Experience and very good knowledge of FEL simulations (including time-dependent simulations).
  • Knowledge of and ability to model and analyze accelerator systems.
  • Very good knowledge of English.
  • Deep experience of simulations with ASTRA, elegant and Genesis 1.3
  • Experience from previous FEL design studies is an advantage.
