Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Most of the work will take place at the MAX IV Laboratory, and the CoSAXS beamline (https://www.maxiv.lu.se/accelerators-beamlines/beamlines/cosaxs/), while the position will formally be placed at the Division of Biochemistry and Structural Biology, in the Department of Chemistry. More information about the division can be found here: http://www.cmps.lu.se/biostruct/. CoSAXS is a beamline for small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) that in addition has a separate wide angle detector to record wide angle scattering (WAXS).

Job description
This is a two year postdoc position with two main tasks.
1) To participate in beamline operation and development of the CoSAXS beamline. This includes sharing responsibilities for operation, support for external users, maintenance and further development of the beamline in close collaboration with the CoSAXS team
2) To further develop a particular sample environment for the CoSAXS beamline that allows for simultaneous optical spectroscopy measurements (UV-VIS, fluorescence, Raman) and SAXS/WAXS data collection.

This includes optimizing the sample environment for time resolved studies of soft matter solutions and to do active research in the area of protein aggregation (fibril formation) in solution. It also includes the development of data analysis routines for protein assembly/aggregation fibrillation kinetic studies. Ultimately, we here aim to understand the structure-to-function relationships in fibre forming proteins (pathologic and non-pathologic) supramolecular structures and assembly, and the molecular pathways in fibre formation.

These two main tasks each correspond to circa 50 % of full time.

Some travel and working out of hours will be necessary. On call services may apply in the future.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in physics, physical chemistry or equivalent.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken) with excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience in manipulating and interpreting large data sets, data management.
  • Excellent programming skills using Matlab, Python or C++.
  • Experience and competence in solution small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) of biological samples or polymers.
  • Experience with SAXS data reduction and analysis routines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams and interact with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff in a dynamic Environment.

Meritorious

  • Experience in instrument control (X-ray equipment, sample environment, etc.).
  • Experience in HPLC, UV-VIS, Raman, Fluorescence analysis.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
