Subject description

The candidate will conduct research on the extent to which the Great Green Wall programme in the Sahel has resulted in sustainable improvements of the environment and livelihoods in four of the participating countries: Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia. The Great Green Wall project is a collaboration with NASA GSFC where most of the data processing will be done. The candidate will also conduct research on assessing environmental tradeoffs between cropland intensification and environmental impacts in North Africa. These projects will apply mixed methods approaches, including surveys, document analysis, remote sensing, use of geospatial data and ecosystem modelling.

Note: Due to political unrest and the Covid-19 situation, no fieldwork is expected. Country-based teams will conduct surveys.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject area of the position
  • Excellent oral and written proficiency in English
  • Profiency in French and Arabic
  • Proficiency in remote sensing applications in drylands
  • Experience with applying mixed methods approaches (surveys, document analysis, remote sensing, GIS, ecosystem modelling)
  • Profiency with the ecosystem model LPJ-GUESS
  • Demontrated succuess in publishing peer-reviewed articles

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

Consideration will also be given to drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills to strengthen/and or complement ongoing research within the department.

Terms of employment

The employment will be a fulltime (100%), temporary position as researcher for a period of one year.
