ICOS Carbon Portal is hosted by the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Sciences and is part of ICOS ERIC, the legal entity of the Integrated Carbon Observation System that provides high quality long-term measurements of greenhouse gas exchange in the domains of atmosphere, ecosystems and ocean.  Carbon Portal offers open access to all ICOS high-quality and standardised greenhouse gas data, as well as scientific and educational products produced by our scientific users. The Carbon Portal is thus a 'one-stop shop' for all ICOS data products. Carbon Portal also (co-)develops web services for the user community that support the scientific exploration of the data.

Work duties

The candidate will further develop the elaborated data products inside the ICOS Jupyter environment to assist the ICOS scientific community in exploring and analysing the ICOS data and derived (model) data, also in combination with ancillary data. The candidate will contribute to several EU projects with tight deadlines. The candidate will also design, implement and perform user and stakeholder surveys to explore the user and stakeholder needs for elaborated products directed at scientists and policy, especially directed towards monitoring and verification of greenhouse gas fluxes in the framework of climate mitigation.

Qualifications

  • Education: MSc in a relevant field like Environmental Sciences or Physical Geography
  • Experience: some experience in working in project organisations is desired. Experience in managing large data volumes and complex data is required.
  • Knowledge: carbon cycle science, experience in working with GIS and programming in python.
  • Competences: good communication skills, can cooperate in a small team and is able to translate user needs into requirements and useful products. Good presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Affinity with addressing environmental problems is desirable.

Consideration will also be given to i.e. good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research and   administrative work within the unit/department, as well as contribute to its future development.

Temporary position (full time) for 6-8 months starting in October 2020
