Subject description
The postgraduate subject is industrial electrical engineering.

The focus of this employment is on modeling, design and control of energy supply and energy use of power-intensive systems with irregular but high energy use and a relatively weak electricity grid connection. These systems include fully electrified (heavy) vehicles together with other systems that also require power and energy. Examples of such applications are agriculture, road construction, mining, etc., but also goods terminals for package distribution, where time and place for charging do not harmonize with time and place for energy supply but solutions with potentially portable storage and renewable local electricity energy generation are needed.

Industrial electrical engineering is focused on technology and systems for electrical and electromechanical energy conversion. The subject is by nature interdisciplinary with strong elements of electromagnetism, power electronics and electronics, materials technology, electrical machine design, control technology, as well as real-time systems, industrial automation, and electrical measurement technology.

The subject is linked to industrial automation where research problems at a more general system level are included. Research in industrial electrical engineering is often inspired by industrial problems.

The project is carried out in collaboration with several companies and authorities.

Tasks
IEA is searching for at least one PhD student with focus on model building and simulation of systems according to the subject description, which involves the development of a model building method for electrification of power and energy-intensive systems such as agriculture, mining, road construction etc. The models will be used for analysis and synthesis of vehicle systems, local generation, local storage and charging solutions that together create the conditions for a commercially competitive operation. The work is carried out by building an understanding of the work processes that characterize the applications and looking for common denominators as a basis for a model building.

The main task for a doctoral student is to be devoted to the doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The tasks also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however, to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

The work is carried out in a group with several doctoral students and senior researchers in the same or related field.

Competence
Basic qualification for postgraduate education is fulfilled if the applicant has:

  • graduated at advanced level or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, with content that is relevant to the doctoral program, or
  • in any other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Special qualifications for industrial electrical engineering are fulfilled if the applicant has:

  • at least 30 higher education credits at advanced level with relevance to the subject area
  • very good knowledge of English, in speech and writing.

Assessment criteria
Selection for postgraduate education takes place according to the assessed ability to assimilate the postgraduate education. The assessment of the ability takes place mainly on the basis of the study results at the undergraduate and advanced level.

The following are taken into account:

1.       Knowledge and skills relevant to the dissertation and the subject.

2.       Assessed ability to work independently and ability to formulate and tackle scientific problems.

3.       Ability for written and oral communication.

4.       Other experiences relevant to the education at postgraduate level, e.g. professional experience.

Other assessment criteria:

The work uses a wide range of technologies and skills. It is therefore especially valuable if candidates have the following experience:

A suitable background for applicants is a civil engineering education in technical physics, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering with clear elements in one or more of the areas energy / transport / vehicles / electric power grids.

Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through his or her experience and competence, is judged to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral program.

Terms of employment
Only those who have been admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as doctoral students. The doctoral program is four years for full-time studies. In the case of teaching and other departmental work, the employment is extended to a corresponding degree, however, for a maximum of 5 years (i.e. a maximum of 20% departmental work). Provisions regarding employment as a doctoral student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, 1-7 §.

Instructions for application
You apply for the job via the link at the bottom of the ad. The application should be written in English. The application must contain a personal letter with justification as to why you are interested in the employment and in what way the research project matches your interests and your educational background. The application must also contain a CV, diploma or equivalent as well as other things that you wish to invoke (copies of grades, information for references, previous research, letters of recommendation, etc.).

Lund University welcomes applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. We see gender equality and diversity as a strength and asset.

We do without contacts from advertising salesmen, recruitment, and staffing companies due to government procurement rules.

Welcome with your application!
