The exploration of the Milky Way and its stars and stellar systems is a wide research field in modern astrophysics. Lund Observatory is actively participating and has leading roles in several ground-based spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way, such as the Gaia-ESO survey, WEAVE, and 4MOST. These surveys will provide detailed information about the chemical compositions for several millions of stars in the Milky Way that together with the astrometric results from ESA’s satellite Gaia opens up completely new possibilities within the field of Galactic archaeology.

Job assignments

The PhD student will work within the research areas connected to observational studies of stars and stellar systems through the usage of large data set  from, for example, the Gaia-ESO Survey, WEAVE, and Gaia. These studies will be connected with dynamical and chemical models to understand how large spiral galaxies like the Milky Way form and evolve. Special focus will be put on the outer disk of the Milky Way.

Eligibility

The position is open to students of all nationalities who, at the time of starting the PhD studies, have obtained a Masters degree in astronomy, physics or in other ways obtained the equivalent qualifications. In case of uncertainty concerning the applicant's eligibility, it is advisable to contact the department for clarification. The discipline curriculum for postgraduate studies in Astronomy and astrophysics is found at https://www.science.lu.se/sites/science.lu.se.internal/files/syllabi_astronomy.pdf.

Good knowledge in spoken and written English is required.
