The department of Political Science is looking to hire a research assistant, to be employed on a 40-60 % basis within the projects “Pathways to Breaking the Fossil Fuel Lock-In: Assessing the Influence of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals on Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform”, “Financing industrial decarbonisation: Managing risks and uncertainties to promote green investments in energy intensive industry” and ”Petrochemicals and climate change governance: Powerful fossil ful lock-ins and policy options for transformative change”. 

The work within all three projects will be led by Associate Professor Jakob Skovgaard.  The project on fuel fossil subsidies analyses the potential of international environmental institutions (in the form of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals) for influencing domestic fossil fuel subsidy reforms. The project on petrochemicals aims to investigate different areas of the global petrochemical industry and their implications for climate change mitigation, including global governance and policy options.

The project on financial drivers of climate transitions analyses the financial markets’ willingness to invest in climate projects in the energy-intensive and natural resource-based industries, including which role political risks and uncertainties of climate investments play and how policymakers perceive and address these risks.

The position starts on 10 December 2020 and runs for six month.

Competence
The applicant needs to hold a bachelor degree in Political Science, Sociology, Development Studies, Political Economy or similar, and have documented knowledge in data collection. Other competences relevant for the project subject or work tasks are also valued.

Work tasks
The work within the projects will involve qualitative and quantitive task:
– Data collection of policy documents for the mapping of decisions to reform fossil fuel subsidies, and for case studies within the fossil fuel subsidies project. 
– Data collection regarding public financing of petrochemical projects (especially from the OECD and similar data bases) and on international and Swedish governance of petrochemicals.
– Data collection regarding financing of the climate transition of the energy-intensive and natural resource-based industries from international, EU and Swedish sources.
– Possible administrative tasks.

Evaluation
The evaluation will be based on the experience of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, as well as on knowledge of climate politics, comparative environmental politics, climate transitions and/or international governance.
