The Division of Fire Safety Engineering is responsible for essential parts of the Swedish fire protection engineering programme and the International Master of Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE), the latter in cooperation with the universities of Edinburgh and Gent. In addition, the division is responsible for the training of doctoral students in the field of fire safety engineering. Cooperation with other universities and institutions takes place both in terms of education and research. The division conducts research at high international level within fire development, fire protections systems, modelling, performance-based design, evacuation, human behaviour during fire, support to rescue services and environmental effects of fires. We work in an international environment and are active within standardisation, regulations and international research committees. 

Subject description
Fire Performance Based design of e.g. buildings or urban environments include all parts of the fire development and includes even active system such as sprinklers and smoke ventilation. The fire design can analytical and include deterministic and  probabilistic modelling of smoke spread and evacuation modelling. The subject covers these fire modelling tools and includes empirical models, zone models, CFD models, evacuation models and virtual tools.

Work duties
Work duties of a researcher include mainly performing research in the subject area. Work duties include also:

  • Conducting research projects.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Opportunity for training in higher education teaching and learning.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Very good knowledge in fire modelling tools.
  • Very good knowledge in development of virtual environments.
  • Experience in education within fire modelling tools.
  • Good oral and written proficiency in Swedish. 

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
