Biotechnology is an area of central significance for transition to a sustainable society. In the research discipline, microorganisms or their components are developed and utilized using environmentally sustainable methods to achieve technical products and services. The specific application areas are industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and biotechnology for health. Research involves both fundamental and applied studies within the specific areas. The Division of Biotechnology is now seeking a researcher in his/her early research career.

Work duties

  • be responsible for research tasks in projects at Division of Biotechnology dealing with development of biocatalysts and bioprocesses as well as chemical processes for production of biobased furan derivatives, and product recovery and purification, with due consideration of resource efficiency and low environmental impact,
  • write scientific articles based on his/her research,
  • apply for research funding,
  • participate in supervision of undergraduate students and teaching in undergraduate courses at the division.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD degree in Biotechnology or equivalent
  • Knowledge of industrial biotechnology, microbiology, microbial and enzyme based processes, biocatalyst development, green chemistry and downstream processing,
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience in microbial cultivation techniques, high cell density biotransformations, bioinformatics, gene cloning and expression, site-directed mutagenesis, downstream processing of small and large biomolecules, chromatographic analyses, spectroscopic characterization of products,
  • A good publication record in international journals showing experience in the area 
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Consideration will also be given to good cooperation ability, drive and independence, and how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the ability needed for the reserach project.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of furan chemistry and synthesis,
  • Knowledge and experience in creating gene mutations by different techniques,
  • Experience of participation and cooperation in multidisciplinary projects,
  • Experience of publishing in high impact journals, critical review of literature,
  • Good communication skills, both in written and oral communication.

Terms of employment Fixed-term employment, 100 %, 2021-01-15 – 2022-01-14.
