Purpose of the post
Christian thought has played an ambivalent role in contributing to discourse about modernity, ‘secularism’, and ‘post-secularism’. This is especially the case for Danish theologian and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard’s soteriology and ethics are distinctively Christian, but surprisingly, his radical conceptions of faith and subjectivity may offer resources for understanding and evaluating the place of religion in the public sphere.
The aim of this research position is to investigate Kierkegaard’s philosophy and theology for tools to interpret, reframe, and critique academic discourse about the role of religion in modernity, and the status of the public sphere as a ‘secular’ space.
