Laboratory assistant in eco-physiology at the Evolutionary Ecology unit/Department of Biology

Work Duties
We are looking for a person to run laboratory assays measuring the following parameters of the oxidative balance in avian plasma such as malondialdehyde, fatty acids, uric acid concentrations and antioxidant capacity. Technologies to be used include gas chromatography with mass-spec functions, and colourimetric assays using microplate readers. Following an introduction to the methodologies used (if needed), the assistant is expected to mostly work alone. Other duties include integration of chromatograms, calculating concentrations from the raw output data of the assays, using Excel. The data will be used to answer questions related to physiological cost and decisions during avian migration.
The laboratory is part of the Evolutionary Ecology Department at Lund University, so ideally the candidate lives in or near Lund. The work is expected to take 6 weeks if working full-time.
The position will be based within the urban avian ecology research group led by Dr Caroline Isaksson, within the Department of Biology. More information about the group’s research can be found here: https://www.biology.lu.se/caroline-isaksson.

Qualifications
Applicants must be able to demonstrate evidence of:

  • A MSc or similar on the topic
  • Experience of the specific laboratory work
  • Experience with GC-MS
  • Experience with microplate readers
  • Experience with integrating chromatograms, especially of fatty acids
  • Good teamworking skills, but also the ability to work independently
  • Good written and oral proficiency in English

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good communicative skills, previous experience with the assays as well as the ability to work independently in the laboratory.
