Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Diffraction & Scattering

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The CoSAXS beamline will be a state-of-the-art multipurpose Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) instrument with opportunities to use the inherent high coherence of the MAX IV machine through X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) experiments. It will offer high brilliance, monochromatic and tuneable X-rays, with outstanding performance in low beam divergence and high X-ray flux. This high- performance X-ray beam will be complemented by an exceptional pool of sample environments and detector systems. Several techniques will be available through modular operation: USAXS/SAXS/ WAXS, protein solution SAXS, time resolved SAXS and XPCS amongst others. It will meet the demands of a large and broad community of users.

Tasks
CoSAXS started commissioning with X-ray beam in late 2019. An expert with significant experience is sought to join the team at CoSAXS to collaborate in the commissioning of the optics. The successful scientist will define and carry out commissioning tasks related to the optical elements over a maximum of 1 year, at 40 %, from the beginning of Jan, 2021.

He/she will characterize the performance and compare with simulations. He/she will be prepare a written report of the commissioning activities. He/she will additionally advise on future commissioning tasks. The scientist should be flexible for the date of employment at MAX IV, as this will depend on the completion of necessary installation work. The scientist will work remotely with the CoSAXS team to achieve his/her tasks.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a:

- PhD in Physics

- Significant experience of synchrotron based optics design (> 15 years)

- Demonstrated knowledge of simulations of X-ray optics

- Hands-on experience of commissioning and characterisation of synchrotron beamlines and synchrotron X-ray optical elements including monochromators and mirrors

- Publication record in the field of synchrotron X-ray instrumentation, synchrontron X-ray optics and X- ray simulations (ray-tracing)

- IT skills including data analysis using, for example, Matlab and python

- Experience of beamline control software programming at the beamline scientist level (not user-level)

- Expertise in scattering/diffraction and spectroscopy techniques
