Subject description
Fifth Generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communication systems are expected to provide much higher network capacities, multi-Gigabit-per-second  data rates, low latency and ultra-reliable communication while at similar cost and energy dissipation as today. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) and lower THz frequency bands (30-300 GHz) have been seen as the key enabler for B5G. Research for understanding the mmWave and lower THz propagation channel is essential, since the propagation channels are distinct at different frequency bands, and devices and applications have to be designed with the constraints set by the propagation channel. However, very little is known about the channel characteristics at this lower THz band. To fill the gaps, the project aims to explore the “new frequency bands” and the possibilities these open up for. The goal of the project is to create basic theory, technology and knowledge in channel characterization, parameter estimation, and modeling for the lower THz channel. We aim to gain the very first understanding, make breakthroughs and provide guidelines to open up for realistic system design and performance analysis of communication, positioning and sensing in the lower THz band.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Building up and maintaining a state of the art software radio based channel sounding system for communications in the lower THz band focusing on directional properties and dynamic behaviour of the propagation channel.
  • Development of high resolution parameter estimation algorithms that are capable of obtaining complete high-resolution estimates of the propagation parameters with low computation complexity and high accuracy.
  • Planning and performing measurement campaigns, with subsequent analysis to extract relevant channel parameters.
  • Developing spatially consistent channel models that well reflect the behaviour of the channel for communication and positioning purposes.
  • Teaching in the first, second or third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Practical experience from millimeter wave channel measurements.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Knowledge in various high resolution parameter estimation algorithms.
  • Knowledge in radio channel characterization.
  • Experience from development of radio channel models.
  • Experience from development of channel sounders for wireless communication.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. Please draw up the application in accordance with LTH’s Academic qualifications portfolio – see link below. Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system. Read more:
