The Division of Synchrotron Radiation Physics (www.sljus.lu.se) is a part of the Department of Physics and has more than 50 employees. The focus of the research is experimental studies of electronic, structural and chemical properties of materials, accelerators for Synchrotron radiation and instruments and methods for Synchrotron radiation. At the Division we use and develop a wide range of Synchrotron- and lab-based techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy/imaging and X-ray diffraction/imaging. We also host one of Sweden's largest facilities for scanning probe microscopy. We are additionally engaged in the development of the MAX IV Laboratory in the fields of beamlines, experimental stations, techniques for Synchrotron radiation and the accelerator systems.

Subject description
X-rays have a unique ability to investigate samples in their natural state, such as live cells, proteins in solution or electronic devices in operation. Using state of the art optics, X-rays can now be focused to below 100 nm. This project will study the interaction of X-rays with semiconductor nanostructures.

The project will develop methods to study metal halide perovskite nanostructures at high spatial resolution. Possible studies include for instance X-ray diffraction of operational devices and phase transitions. The candidate will have significant freedom to influence the direction of the project, and is expected to take initiatives and drive the project quite independently.

Nanostructures will be investigated using nanofocused X-ray beams at the Nanomax beamline at the new MAX IV synchrotron, as well as at PETRA-III in Germany, ESRF in France and possibly other international synchrotron facilities.

Work duties
The main duty involved is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The researcher is expected to interact with the master students and the PhD students in the research group and contribute to meetings and seminars.

The work will be performed in collaboration with several other researchers at the institute as well as a number of doctoral students and master students.

Work duties include:

  • The main task is to perform synchrotron investigations, in particular high-resolution X-ray diffraction, of metal halide perovskite nanostructures.
  • Write beamtime applications
  • Prepare and manage beamtimes.
  • Analyze data, in particular XRD
  • Analysis of the results
  • Writing of publications
  • Co-supervision of MSc and PhD students
  • Collaboration with experts in sample preparation and optical methods.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • It is required that the applicant has extensive of synchrotron investigations, in particular high-resolution X-ray diffraction, of metal halide perovskite nanostructures.
  • Experience in managing synchroton beamtimes
  • Experience in X-ray diffraction
  • Experience in writing publications.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject and on previous experience that helps to perform the described work duties within the short duration of the project.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
