Post-doctoral position in Additive Manufacturing

Research within the Product Development division focuses on four main thematic areas:

1) Design for Emergent Technologies and Digitalisation
2) Management and Execution of Product Development and Design
3) Product Experience
4) Design for Sustainability and the Circular Economy.
Research aims are to contribute to companies’ innovativeness and competitiveness. The Product Development division is part of the department of Design Sciences. At Design Sciences, we aim towards UN’s Global Goals to create a sustainable future. For us, it is about designing technologies and environments for the good of all people based on these sustainability goals.

Subject description
This post-doctoral position is related to the thematic area: 1) Design for Emergent Technologies and Digitalisation, which emphasizes development and design of innovative solutions and methods originating in new technology and digitalisation. We address different topics such as design optimization, generative design, mass customization, bio-mimetic design, new materials and smart devices. In particular, research within the area addresses Additive Manufacturing (AM).

The position is aimed at strengthening our research on AM, which is primarily focused on design for AM. Key aspects addressed include design methodology, parametric and topology optimization, generative design and lattice-based structures. To expand the research related to these aspects, we are looking for a skilled and ambitious candidate that can contribute to further develop our research.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of the working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Main duties are:

  • Research within the subject area, individually and in teams
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Supervision of PhDs and Master theses
  • Practical work in running equipment and system/s for AM
  • Teaching in first, second and third cycle courses
  • Teaching commissioned courses
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Skills in publishing research results in renowned scientific journals
  • Knowledge and interest in engineering design
  • Practical experience of running SLM/SLS systems
  • Networks within academia and/or industry
  • Teaching experience

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research
  • Teaching skills 

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Knowledge of AM materials
  • Knowledge of AM production technologies
  • Knowledge of design for AM
  • Experience in CAD software
  • Experience in build preparation
  • Experience in AM post processing (thermal and mechanical)
  • Experience in material characterization
  • Experience in physical testing
  • Experience of commissioned education or popular science presentations
  • Industry experience/network

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years.
