Work duties
Lund University is seeking qualified candidates for a 2-year research engineer position to support a joint project with the European Spallation Source (“ESS”). The project focuses on developing innovative science using polarised neutron techniques and carrying out polarised neutron instrumentation work for the ESS on several instrument for imaging and scattering. The project is jointly funded by Tillväxtverket and the ESS. The research engineer will be based in the Division of Physical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, working closely with scientists at Division of Synchrotron Radiation Research in the Department of Physics, Materials Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and ESS.  The successful candidate will be working with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, engineers and technicians and carry out a variety of instrumentation tasks:

  • establish detailed mechanical specifications based on scientific requirements and by liaising with the various stakeholders,
  • produce the actual conceptual and detailed engineering designs,
  • prepare engineering documentation including quality assurance,
  • participate and execute relevant reviews / validation,
  • provide manufacturing oversight, assembly lead and site acceptance tests related to the mechanical elements / systems,
  • provide technical and administrative support during system testing, integration and commissioning.

An essential aspect is the close collaboration with the various stakeholders, include Lund University supervisors, ESS instrument teams, but also teams for environment, health & safety as well as manufacturing, procurement and facility management. 

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or above in engineering. Experiences in mechanical engineering of complex engineering problems using 3D CAD software. Solid knowledge for engineering codes and standards. Be able to start work no later than 15/4/2021.

Other merits
Experiences in any of the following would be an advantage: scientific instrumentation, electromagnetic modelling, use of FEA tools, and hands-on engineering work. Experience working in a research environment and the ability to work in an international environment would be an advantage. Fluent in written and spoken English.

Two year fixed-term employment ending 2023-03-31.
