Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Subject description
The researcher should work on synthesis and structural analysis of weakly ordered intermetallics for thermoelectric applications. The work involves high temperature synthesis, and may involve the use of toxic metals. Analysis includes thermal analysis and single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction.

Work duties
The candidate will work on synthesis and analysis of thermoelectrically relevant  intermetallics and the writing of publications based on the findings. The candidate is expected to partake in education to some degree, e.g. as supervisor of master student projects and may participate as teaching assistant in courses in materails chemistry.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience of work with intermetallics in synthesis.
  • Experience in handling toxic metals.
  • Experience in xray diffraction, particularly for complex systems.
  • Experience of working with thermoelectric materials.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.
  • As the materials tend to be poorly ordered, experience from crystallographic work with restricted access to data (e.g. high pressure studies) is an asset.
  • As many of the materials studied are analogues of naturally occurring minerals, experience or a degree in mineralogy is an asset.
  • As much of the older literature is in German or Russian, knowledge in these languages is an asset.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
The position is full time for one year, with a preferrable starting date May 1st 2021. For information about the position, contact Professor Sven Lidin; sven.lidin@chem.lu.se

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English and be compiled into a PDF-file containing:

  • résumé/CV, including a list of publications,
  • a general description of past research and future research interests (no more than three pages),
  • contact information of at least two references,
  • copy of the doctoral degree certificate, and other certificates/grades that you wish to be considered.
