Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused around different aspects of semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to quantum physics, to different applications including bionanotechnology and biophysics. The division leads NanoLund, the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University. Lund Nano Lab is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the “Engineering Nanoscience” program.

For the past fifteen years, our research on one-dimensional semiconductor structures, so-called nanowires, has been at the forefront of the international research. In particular, our research has played a major role in establishing a research field where nanostructures are used for measurements on individual cells and to control the behavior of cells.

Work duties

The main duties of the researcher are to do research and to perform research tasks in terms of experimental work as well as data analysis and writing of publications.

Furthermore, a key task is to train and guide users of equipment such as flow cytometer and nanostraw electroporation set-up, and help users with nanostraw injections,  oligonucleotide reporter technology and STED microscopy imaging of live cells. The new researcher will provide qualified support and expertise to the three professors active in the biophysics area, ensuring a long-term knowledge and development regarding nanostraw-electroporation, oligonucleotide reporter technology and STED microscopy imaging of live cells. The new researcher will also be responsible for the continuous development and maintenance of the cell lab and the biochemistry lab, as well as related equipment. Additionally, the new researcher will have an active role in our continuous work on the chemical safety in the biophysical area.

An important responsibility for the researcher is to maintain and adapt the equipment in the biochemistry and cell culture labs to maximize the benefit to the users, specifically the flow cytometer and electroporation setup.

The researcher is also expected to contribute to co-supervision of Masters and PhD

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in materials science or a related field
  • Hands-on postdoctoral experience with cell culture, cell transfection, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and cleanroom work
  • In combination with the experimental knowledge it is required to have capabilities for precise in-depth understanding and interpretation of results of applications of these technologies for different types of biomedical and biological questions
  • The applicant should be able to perform experiments in international and national collaborations with researchers in other fields or research areas
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • A service minded attitude is absolutely required together with an ability to work independently and take initiatives

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Experience with nanostraw-enabled cell transfection as well as probing cells using molecular beacons is desirable
  • Teaching experience is valued favorably.
  • Experience of maintaining research equipment is a desirable qualification.
  • Experience in project management and supervising student projects is valued highly with an ability to coordinate in a structured manner.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
