Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused around different aspects of nanophysics, ranging from materials science to biophysics, to different applications. The division plays a major role in NanoLund, the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University, and it hosts Lund Nano Lab, which is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the “Engineering Nanoscience” program.

A significant part of the research at the division is in the area of nano-biotechnology, where we develop new methods to investigate biological systems, and to use biomolecules in nanodevices. Among other projects, we coordinate the Horizon 2020 FET Proactive project Bio4Comp that is concerned with the development and upscaling of network-based biocomputers based on molecular motors.

Work duties

The researcher will contribute to the development of network-based biocomputers using so-called in vitro motility assays (IVMA), including the actin-myosin system (PNAS 113, 2591 (2016)).

Work duties include:

  • Network design based on mathematical principles.
  • Nanofabrication using bio-compatible processes.
  • Test and characterization using fluorescence microscopy.
  • Image- and data analysis, including using machine learning.
  • Day-to-day advising of a PhD student.

The researcher will work in the research group of Prof. Heiner Linke and in close collaboration with several European partners, including TU Dresden and Linnéuniversitet Kalmar.

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in experimental physics or nanofabrication.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Significant experience in nanofabrication
  • Significant experience in fluorescence microscopy.
  • Experience in surface chemistry.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

Experience in working with in-vitro motility assays Experience of designing biocomputer networks for solving NP-complete problems

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
