The applicant’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies and research will primarily be assessed on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle.

  • Quality and content of previous written work, such as theses or published articles.
  • Ability to participate actively in the Department’s research environment.

We are interested in applicants who can collaborate with the Department’s energy group by broadening its expertise conceptually from energy history and trade-embedded energy towards human ecological and climate history. We thus favour applicants with a strong commitment and interest in environmental economic history, and documented experience in relevant areas such as human ecology and environmental factor flows.

Project

The project—"The causes and consequences of the Little Ice Age energy transition”—investigates, first, the effects of long- (millennia) and short-term (decades) climate change on early modern England, specifically how the cooler, drier, and windier climate during the Little Ice Age relates to the fossil energy transition in London after about 1550. Second, it investigates the relation of this transition to real-wage developments compared to trade-embedded environmental factor flows. The project relies on the Department’s expertise in energy history and trade-embedded energy, but aims to broaden the scope of investigated feedbacks to climate and human ecology more generally.
