Appointment

Appointment until further notice as a senior lecturer in medical biochemistry at the Department of Experimental Medical Sciences.

Subject: medical biochemistry

Biochemistry is the study of molecular and chemical processes in living organisms.

One crucial method employed in biochemistry is the reconstruction of a biological process in a test tube from individual components. Biochemical studies provide knowledge of the precise function of the molecules involved in the process.

Duties

The position involves reinforcing strategically vital research in the field of biochemistry that is underway at the Department of Experimental Medical Sciences. The position will be based in Lund.

The successful candidate will establish a new line of research in the field of biochemistry that can collaborate with and strengthen established research in the fields of molecular microbiology and structural biology at the Department and Faculty. The intention of the appointment is to strengthen preclinical activities at first, second and third-cycle and within research.

In addition to conducting autonomous research and development work and teaching and supervision at first, second and third cycle level, duties will include administration and leadership. Other duties may also be included.

Qualifications

Pursuant to Section 4 of Chapter 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100), a person qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve. Teaching expertise is also required. Pursuant to Lund University’s Appointment Rules, applicants shall have undergone at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in order to be eligible for the position.

Assessment criteria

The applicant shall have demonstrated research and teaching expertise of relevance to the subject. In assessing qualifications, particular importance will be attached to research expertise. The primary consideration is that the applicant has documented experience of biochemistry with the emphasis on studying clinically relevant processes in bacteria. These include cellular processes that constitute antibiotic targets (protein synthesis, for example), the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and tolerance in bacteria, and stress and virulence. Considerable weight will be given to documented expertise in biochemical reconstruction (e.g. cryogenic electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography and/or structural proteomics), medical chemistry, analytical chemistry and functional genomics.

The applicant shall show that they are conducting their own current research in the subject at a high level, as well as in-depth knowledge of related fields such as molecular biology, microbiology, structural biology and functional genomics. The applicant shall have published articles in international journals of high repute, of which they are the senior author.

A useful qualification is provided by success in obtaining grants in national and international competition.

In assessing qualifications, weight will be given to teaching expertise in the subjects biochemistry, and molecular biology and microbiology. Additional useful qualifications are provided by experience of teaching the specific subject molecular biology/biochemistry, as well as research methodology and scientific writing and presentation. Weight shall be given to first, second and third-cycle teaching expertise and the ability to supervise postdoctoral fellows, researchers, master’s students and doctoral students. The applicant shall demonstrate leadership ability, the ability to interact with the surrounding community and good collaborative skills. Considerable weight shall be given to personal suitability.

A general eligibility requirement for teaching staff at Lund University is suitability given the requirements of the position and the ability otherwise required to perform the duties to a high standard. In addition to the provisions of the Higher Education Ordinance, Lund University’s Appointment Rules and the Faculty of Medicine’s general requirement profile and assessment criteria for appointing senior lecturers also apply, see Guidelines for Academic Appointments.
