The research group

The research group for Lung Bioengineering and Regeneration conducts research in lung bioengineering and regeneration and conducts cutting edge research in the field. The group is led by senior lecturer Darcy Wagner and consists of both research and technical staff. The group is located at the Biomedical Center in Lund. We are looking for a driven doctoral student to work with a cellular scaffolds for transplantation and reconstruction and regeneration of tissue. The employment is full-time 100% with the desired start date is on 1 May 2021 or by agreement.

Work tasks

The main objectives for the doctoral candidate will be to conduct research education, which includes participation in and development of research projects but also to master graduate courses and state-of-the-art techniques. The majority of this work must be done independently and in collaboration with both internal and external members of the research group.

The aim of this project is to try to understand the effects of different decellularization processes, recellularization of tissues and to identify the optimal storage conditions which maintain biological and mechanical function. The tasks mainly include de- and recellularization and in vitro and in vivo characterization. Other tasks within the research group may also be relevant.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University degree in medicine, biology or biochemistry
  • Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of histology, light microscopy, tissue analysis (including human), tissue handling (tissue collection, fixation and embedding) and paraffin-embedded tissue sectioning.
  • Experience of working with human tissue, including decellularization
  • Clinical training, including experience in surgery
  • Experience in animal handling
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including knowledge of English

Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive and independence, as well as how the applicant, through his or her experience and competence, is judged to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral program.

Merits for the employment are:

The project is interdisciplinary and therefore candidates with a broad competence profile will be of particular interest.

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
