Faculty of Engineering, LTH, the Department of Construction Sciences

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Division of Solid Mechanics at the Department of Construction Sciences conducts research and teaching in material mechanics and associated numerical and experimental methods. The numerical models that are developed aim to describe materials on several scales and are based on experimental measurements where there is a strong connection to, for example, synchrotron light sources such as MAX IV Laboratory.

The work environment at the division is characterised by creativity and personal responsibility. Through active participation in the planning and implementation of research projects, there are good opportunities for professional development. We are now looking for a researcher in advanced experimental characterisation of paper-based packaging materials.

Work tasks
The employment is part of a project to develop new experimental methods for characterising deformation mechanisms in packaging materials. These deformation mechanisms must be characterized on several scales, from micro to macro, in order to increase the understanding of the mechanisms that affect the mechanical properties of the material. New experimental methods and experimental equipment will be developed. X-ray tomography is central to the project as is the development of image analysis tools for processing 3D and 4D data (3D + time). Both the 4D Imaging Lab at LTH and international synchrotron facilities will be used. In addition to increased understanding, the results generated in the project will also be used as a starting point for the development of numerical models.

The main task of the position is to focus on the research project, but participation in teaching and other departmental work is possible, e.g., supervision at the undergraduate level, advanced level and postgraduate level. The tasks also include taking an active part in interacting with external stakeholders, both within and outside academia, as well as participating in research projects within the wider network. In addition, you are expected to participate in the daily departmental work.

Qualification requirements
You must have a PhD in a mechanics-related discipline and have experience in research areas relevant to the project. You must also have experience of experiments with a focus on paper and paperboard materials as well as experience in X-ray tomography and 3D/4D image analysis. Since you are expected to participate in research projects where Swedish is the main language, very good knowledge of both Swedish and English is a requirement.

Other qualifications
Experience of experiments using synchrotron light sources is an advantage. Experience of both commercial and academic experimental analysis software plus good programming skills are important.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. We are looking for someone who is a creative problem solver with a great deal of independence and good ability to work in teams. You should be genuinely interested in and ready to tackle new challenges. You should be an enterprising, patient, persistent and pedagogic person.

The selection will be based on evaluation of skills and experience in advanced experimental methods, X-ray tomography and image analysis. Communication skills and the ability to work independently will also be evaluated.

Application instructions
The application should contain a personal letter with justification as to why you are interested in the employment and in what way the employment matches your qualifications. The application should also contain a CV and diploma, or equivalent, as well as other things that you wish to include (copies of grades, information for references, letters of recommendation, etc.).
