Lund University, Department of Technology and Society, Division of Transport and Roads, conducts research and provides higher education within the field of transport planning. Increasingly, the division is conducting research into railways: how to understand and reduce train delays, how to plan better timetables, how to realistically simulate operations, and more. In order to strengthen our division in this regard, we offer a post-doctoral position.

We are looking for a researcher with a solid background in railway planning and analysis. We foresee a person who is interested in developing new approaches, in working closely with other researchers, industry and wider society, and in further expanding the railway research efforts of the division.

Subject description This research position focusing on railway capacity and punctuality is intended to address research on interlinkages between train delays, timetabling, and simulation (micro and macro) for both freight and passenger trains. The expected approach is quantitative and data driven, requiring knowledge in handling empirical delay data and distributions, timetabling, an understanding of railway simulation approaches, as well as experience of database management.

Work duties The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research within the specified reaserch area. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours and is conducted on basic level, advanced level and postgraduate level. The position shall include the opportunity for three of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society mainly in Sweden.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented interaction with European railway industry.

Documented skills that respond to the topic description. Programming and database management skills.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • Good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Good ability to seek and acquire external research funding.
  • Good ability to collaborate with industry and wider society in Sweden.
  • Good ability to work with data from the Swedish Transport Administration.
  • Oral and written proficiency in any scandinavian language.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
