Lunds universitet, LTH, Matematikcentrum, LTH

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Division of Mathematics LTH and Numerical analysis is seeking candidates for one or two post-doctoral positions within computer vision and machine learning. The positions will be placed in the Mathematical imaging group and the research of the applicant is therefore expected to contribute to one or more of the group’s main research areas:

  • Machine learning with a focus on design of computer programs that can learn from examples. The group works on basic theory, optimization and algorithmic design. Many applications are industrially motivated.
  • Methods on global optimization, with a focus on large scale problems relevant to 3D reconstruction and scene understanding. Examples of relevant problems are motion synchronization and low rank approximation.
  • Solving systems of multivariate polynomial equations. These are common in for example SLAM-systems, where they need to be solved multiple times, with high demands on speed and accuracy. The group works on theory for polynomial solvers, often based on algebraic geometry, both with respect to specific applications and more general systems.
  • Medical image analysis, with applications within for example segmentation and classification using neural networks. The group has both ongoing and recurrent cooperations with Skånes University Hospital (SUS).

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within one (or more) of the areas listed above.
  • The research also includes supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Teaching in the first and second cycles of studies, mainly in the courses Image analysis, Medical image analysis, Computer vision and Machine learning.
  • Communication and collaboration with surrounding society and industry, as well as work with the group’s web pages.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • A strong mathematical background and programming skills.
  • The applicant shall have publications in subject relevant journals and conferences.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Scientific publications in leading computer vision or machine learning journals and conferences such as ICCV, CVPR, ECCV, NIPS, PAMI, IJCV and JMLR.
  • Previously received external research funding.
  • Documented experience of supervision of degree projects.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
