ICOS Carbon Portal is hosted by the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Sciences and is part of ICOS ERIC, the legal entity of the Integrated Carbon Observation System that provides high quality long-term measurements of greenhouse gas exchange in the domains of atmosphere, ecosystems and ocean.  Carbon Portal offers open access to all ICOS high-quality and standardised greenhouse gas data, as well as scientific and educational products produced by our scientific users. The Carbon Portal is thus a 'one-stop shop' for all ICOS data products. Carbon Portal also (co-)develops web services for the user community that support the scientific exploration of the data.

ICOS Carbon Portal is looking for a research engineer to support the development of elaborated data products for scientists and policy, especially directed towards monitoring and verification of greenhouse gas fluxes in the framework of climate mitigation. The candidate will design, implement and perform user and stakeholder surveys to explore the user and stakeholder needs for elaborated products. Based on the requirements the candidate will work on spatio-temporal optimisation of observation networks to determine regional and city-scale CO2 emissions, making use of modelling and GIS techniques, ICOS and other measurement campaign data, also in combination with ancillary information. The candidate is expected to synthesize research results in conference presentations and peer reviewed scientific publications.

Qualifications

  • MSc in a relevant field like Environmental Sciences or Physical Geography
  • Experience in working with GIS and programming in python or similar languages
  • Good communication skills: ability to efficiently communicate with users and stakeholders

Other merits

  • Experience with Jupyter notebooks and interactive computing environments
  • Experience in managing large data volumes and analysis of complex datasets
  • Experience with working international and in projects
  • Ability to work independently but also to collaborate in a small team
