The Mathematics Center has about 130 employees (including PhD students), of which about 25 at the Division of Mathematical Statistics, jointly belonging to the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering. Other divisions are Mathematics – Faculty of Science and Mathematics - Faculty of Engineering. The Center for Mathematics conducts research in probability theory, statistical theory, statistical signal processing, financial mathematics, computational statistics, environmental statistics, computational mathematics and numerical analysis, algebra, operator theory and complex analysis, linear and non-linear partial differential equations, differential geometry, dynamic systems, dynamic systems, image analysis, as well as mathematical education. The courses taught at the Center lead to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics and related areas.
The research in Mathematical Statistics is conducted within the following research groups: “probability and statistics theory”, “stochastic modeling”, “financial mathematics”, “spatial-temporal modeling” and “statistical signal processing”. We are looking for a candidate in the areas related to “stochastic modeling” and “spatial-temporal modeling”, who can also provide some new aspects in theoretically well-founded method development for data science applications.
Job description
The position mainly entails research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and includes supervision of master thesis and doctoral students. Teaching amounts to a maximum of 60% of full-time work, and some administrative tasks may be included in the employment. The exact content of the tasks, as well as the distribution between research and teaching may change over time.
The potential candidate is expected to contribute to one of the two research groups, “stochastic modeling” or “spatial-temporal modeling”, e.g. through research collaboration and seminar activities. He or she is also expected to actively seek external funding for the activities at the department, and to develop collaboration (including interdisciplinary) both within the university and with other universities and public bodies.
Eligibility
A potential candidate must have demonstrated pedagogical skills and have completed a doctoral or an equivalent degree in mathematical statistics or a relevant subject, which is related to the employment's subject content and the tasks included in employment (according to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 4).
The employment requires university pedagogical training of at least five weeks or corresponding knowledge which has been acquired in some other way. In special cases, exceptions can be made from this requirement.
There are also some general requirements for academic staff at Lund University, which ensure that the person taking the post has the abilities required for fulfilling the duties.
Basis of assessment
The selection criteria also include the ability of the applicant to strengthen and to complement the department's teaching and research.
Applicants must present their current and future research plans for the next few years, and to demonstrate how they can contribute to the research at the department. Scientific merits will be assessed mainly on the basis of quality and number of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
The evaluation of the pedagogical abilities shall be given as much importance as that of the scientific ones. Applicants must present their pedagogical portfolio in which they describe how they can contribute to the teaching at the department.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the Appointment Rules of Lund University.
We expect a non-Swedish-speaking candidate to acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish language within three years to be able to teach and communicate with the university's various bodies in this language.
The application process
We would recommend you to write your application in English, since it will be assessed by international experts. The application should be formulated according to the Faculty of Science’s instructions for applications for an academic position. Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system.
