ICOS Carbon Portal is hosted by the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Sciences and is part of the European Integrated Carbon Observation System Research Infrastructure (ICOS-RI) that provides high quality long-term measurements of greenhouse gas exchange in the domains of atmosphere, ecosystems and ocean. Carbon Portal offers open access to all ICOS high quality and standardised greenhouse gas data, as well as scientific and educational products produced by our scientific users. The Carbon Portal is thus a 'one-stop shop' for all ICOS data products. Carbon Portal also (co-) develops web services for the user community that support the scientific exploration of the data.
Work duties
ICOS Carbon Portal is looking for a junior scientific programmer to support the development of tools for the dissemination of elaborated products and services. You will adapt and integrate existing scientific software into the web service framework of ICOS Carbon Portal. The original codes are mainly written in Python, R, and Fortran and the interfacing will require making use of Bash scripts, Python, R, and/or Scala and Java. Furthermore, you will work on the automation of the processing workflow and be responsible for the retrieval and pre-processing of data that are used in our scientific models and services. The position will involve contributing to open source software, writing supporting documentation and preparing content for international conferences and peer reviewed scientific publications.
You will be part of our team of currently 14 persons with developers, system manager and (data) scientists, working on the joint ICOS Carbon Portal open source codebase.

Terms of employment
Permanent position. A 6 months probationary period can be applicable. Start 1 May 2021, full time position.
