Lunds universitet, LTH, Institutionen för reglerteknik

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Department of Automatic Control is one of the departments at LTH. Our research is focused on the sustainable and safe operation of technical systems to the benefit of people and the planet. We pursue both fundamental research and research on a variety of applications, ranging from those in more traditional technological fields, such as robotics, energy supply, and transportation, to less obvious ones, such as health care, communications, and economics. Automatic control, mathematics, and computer science form the core of all our research. Do you want to be part of our research environment and address tomorrow’s control challenges? Then this researcher position is aimed for you!

This time, we are looking for a candidate for the following research project: Filtering, Optimization, and Control for Autonomous Vehicle, a 23 months research position within the ELLIIT-project "Autonomous Radiation Mapping and Isotope Composition Identification by Mobile Gamma Spectroscopy".

The researcher will work in a cross-disciplinary project which concerns the estimation of radiation fields from spectrometers mounted on UAVs.

The project involves two main components:
The first relates to machine learning and concerns the development of algorithms for Bayesian inference. These methods should incorporate (i) known geometries in the environment, (ii) known attenuation of radiation with distance, and (iii) modeled dynamics of the UAV and sensor.
The second part of the project concerns the implementation and experimental validation of these methods in field experiments.

We seek candidates with a strong background of relevance for control, estimation, robotics and autonomous systems, in combination with a willingness to collaborate and communicate across disciplines. Good knowledge of filtering, system identification, control theory, and relevant methods in machine learning, and experience with C++, Python, Julia, or Matlab is highly desirable. Any experience from experimental robotics research (preferably) or experimental research is desirable.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a researcher position is to conduct research. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the general scientific discussion at the department. Depending on the research project, the candidate may also be expected to initiate and maintain inter-departmental collaborations, and to assist in supervising students on MSc level.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject areain the project.
  • Supervision of degree projects andMScstudents.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider societywithin the project.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:
A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
Good knowledge of filtering, system identification, and control theory.
Good knowledge of relevant methods in machine learning.
Experience with C++, Python, Julia, or Matlab.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
The working languages are English and Swedish. Excellent skills in both spoken and written English are a requirement for the position. Interest in learning Swedish during the employment in Lund is desirable.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
Fixed-term employment, 23 months, 100%.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. LTH uses a special qualifications portfolio to report and document qualifications – see link below. This is to be used also for appointments of researchers.
