The Department of Design Sciences at Lund University, Faculty of Engineering invites applications for a position as Senior Lecturer in Product Development.

Subject
The Division of Product Development at the Department of Design Sciences needs to recruit a Senior Lecturer in the field of product development. The recruitment is supposed to fill a competence gap due to forthcoming retirements. The position will ensure that the division maintain existing teaching but also that modifications are introduced to meet new industrial needs related to digitalization and smart products, for example. Furthermore, the position is part of a strategic investment in the research at the department within the field of product development. 

Subject description
The subject product development includes methods and processes aimed at creating value through development of new, sustainable and innovative technology-based products. It also includes traditional aspects such as machine design (synthesis and analysis), cost-down activities, improved product quality, matching business strategies and product policies, and product offerings to the markets that are motivated from a sustainability perspective. Modern product development uses new methods, new software or advance manufacturing technologies (e.g. additive manufacturing), that contributes to the development and manufacturing of attractive products in a fast and resource efficient way.  

This senior lecturer position is within the sub-field ‘machine design’, with particular focus on product development aspects such as engineering design techniques, design for X, design with non-metallic materials, product quality, and rapid prototyping. The sub-field also includes design for additive manufacturing and design in polymer materials.

Work duties
Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area, with a specific focus on machine design.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Assessment criteria
When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, assessing research and teaching expertise equally.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

  • A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented research experience in the sub-field of machine design.
  • Documented industrial experience in the sub-field of machine design.
  • Documented experience and good ability to lead research groups.

Other qualifications

  • Experience of working in industrial projects within different technology areas.
  • Experience of international collaboration and participation in EU-funded projects.
  • Experience of applying for and receiving research funding.
  • Good competence in additive manufacturing and design in polymer materials.
  • Good competence in design for X and different quality assurance methods.
  • Ability to read technical literature written in German.
     

Consideration will also be given to ability to cooperate, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
